Vietnam is affirming its leading position in the ASEAN region in renewable energy development, especially in the field of rooftop solar power. With more than 100,000 systems installed, this energy source not only contributes nearly 50% of the total solar power capacity but also makes an important mark in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and realize the commitment to net zero emissions by 2050. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ideal conditions promote the solar power development<\/b><\/h2>\n

Vietnam is considered a country with great potential for solar power development thanks to its high solar radiation source, spread throughout the country. In particular, low labor costs and domestically produced equipment significantly reduce investment costs. These factors, combined with the completion of new legal documents, such as Decree 80\/2024\/ND-CP on the mechanism of direct power purchase contracts and Decree 135\/2024\/ND-CP on self-produced and self-consumed rooftop solar power, have created a clear legal corridor, promoting strong market development. <\/span><\/p>\n

Vietnam is considered a country with great potential for solar power development<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Since 2020, Vietnam has put into operation about 17 GW of solar power capacity, helping Vietnam to be among the top in the ASEAN region in terms of clean energy development. Notably, the Commercial and Industrial Rooftop Solar Project (CIRTS), jointly implemented by the GIZ International Cooperation Organization and the Electricity and Renewable Energy Agency, has contributed significantly to this success. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and will be implemented from February 2021 to January 2025. <\/span><\/p>\n

The CIRTS project aims to enhance the capacity to integrate rooftop solar into the grid, addressing the technical and administrative issues involved. The project not only supports the development of clean, energy-efficient power systems, but also raises public awareness, ensures quality standards and fire safety. <\/span><\/p>\n

The CIRTS project has gained a number of notable results, including guidance on system operations and maintenance to maintain performance and extend service life. At the same time, the project has supported Vietnam Electricity (EVN) to improve dispatching capabilities, reduce power outages, and effectively manage distributed energy resources. <\/span><\/p>\n

One of the highlights is the increased accuracy in solar power generation forecasting and improved coordination between transmission and distribution system operators. Memorandums of understanding and data sharing agreements have been signed to optimize load and solar power generation forecasting. <\/span><\/p>\n

The explosion of more than 100,000 rooftop solar power systems is a clear demonstration of Vietnam\u2019s potential and commitment to promoting renewable energy. The development of rooftop solar power not only brings economic benefits but also contributes to building a sustainable energy system, in line with national goals on climate change. With support from international partners and favorable policies, Vietnam is gradually affirming its position as one of the leading renewable energy development centers in the region. <\/span><\/p>\n
